A player in the Glebe women’s ranks for 21 seasons, Linda Tait, has died after a relatively short illness. She was diagnosed with a melanoma in August 2011. She is survived by her mother and her son Sam who was a constant supporter on the sideline from the time of his birth. The Glebe District Hockey Club extends its condolences to them both as well as her partner Rod and her extended family and many friends.

Bob Taylor Receives Life Membership to Sydney Hockey Association

At tonight's Sydney Hockey AGM, our club President Bob Taylor stood down after some 11 years as Vice-President.

Bob's service to Sydney was recognised by Life Membership - noting the vote in favour of this motion was unanimous.

On behalf of the Glebe District Hockey Club, our congratulations to Bob on this wonderful achievement in recognition of the many years of service to Sydney, but ultimately, hockey in general.

For information, hereunder was our formal notice of motion for Bob's nomination, noting that Bob is also a Life Member of our great club.

I'm sure, at opportunity, you would love to send your congratulations to Bob and to this end, Bob's contact details are:

Email: bobtaylor@virginbroadband.com.au

M: 0407 268 105

To SHA Board Members,

I write on behalf of the Glebe District Hockey Club to formally nominate our club president Bob Taylor for Life membership with Sydney Hockey Association.

As you know Bob, has served as Vice-President for over 10 years and in that time has been an integral part of SHA and has worked on various sub-committees particularly those relating to the competition structure and both senior and junior development. In this role. Bob has put club interests aside and has worked to ensure the betterment of Sydney Hockey. This has caused Bob to have many a spirited debate with our club members, but he has always argued SHA's case and to Bob's credit, most times won such debates.

Bob has done this work whilst also being the President of the Glebe District Hockey Club which he has now served as President for 14 years. Bob has been a member of Glebe since 1977 and has served on the club's administration for 28 of his 35 years. Bob's contribution to our club and our sport has been immense.

Bob has made many personal sacrifices and in recognition of these sacrifices and devotion to our club, as both a player and administrator, was awarded life membership in 1996.

Many of you could better detail Bob achievements on the SHA board, but in terms of the above history with the sport of hockey in Sydney, we believe this nomination is most worthy and ask that this be considered / recommended for this year's AGM in November.

Mark Paterson Selected in Kookaburras side for the Champions Trophy December 2011 in Auckland

Eight of the world’s top men’s teams will be in Auckland, New Zealand to play in this year’s premier annual men’s hockey event. It is the last major event on the men’s calendar before the 2012 London Olympics and is a great opportunity for Mark to stake his claims for an Olympic spot in the Kookaburras side.

Glebe Junior Makes NSW Indoor Side

After competing in the Under 13 Indoor Hockey State Championships at Port Macquarie, Glebe Junior Litiana Field has gained selection in one of 2 Under 13 Girls State sides. Litiana will compete in an invitation tournament in Canberra February 2012.
This is an amazing effort from a girl who only started the sport in the U11/2 team from Glebe 2 seasons ago. With her commitment and dedication Litiana improved each year, culminating in NSW State indoor selection.

The GDHC is now on Twitter check out the News section for instructions on how to join and what having Twitter means for the Club

Congratulations to 3rd Grade and 6th Grade Men & 4th Grade Women on their Grand Final Victories!!

3rd Grade defeated Easts 2-0! (Match report in 'Mens Report' tab)

6th Grade Defeated Sutherland 4-1!

4th Grade Women Defeated Sutherland 1-0!

Well done on a great season.

All three senior teams which made their respective Grand Finals were victorious! Three out of Three Ain't Bad!

Under 11's win their Grand Final 5-1!!

Glebe Redback team: Angus Baird, Calam Baird, Tom Braithwaite-Young, James Cooper, Joel Darwin, Jason Hartill, Alanna Howe, Jackson Howe, Meg  Jackman, Alonso Pedraza Luna, Rodrigo Pedraza Luna, Jonah Riley, Riley > Simpson, coach Geoff Baird, Manager David Pritchard

This game was an entertaining, high standard encounter between two skilful, well coached teams played before a crowd of approximately 200 people on a beautiful sunny morning.  There were in excess of 100 Glebe supporters at the ground and the Glebe flag was flying proudly over the Glebe dugout.

Sutherland was minor premiers, with Glebe equal on points, but second after the end of the normal season with a goal difference of only 2 goals putting them into second place. Both teams had suffered one loss during the season and that was to each other.  The major semi-final finished a draw, but Sutherland went through because they were higher on the table. Pre-match expectations were for a close game. Five of the Glebe team had also played and been beaten in U11 grand finals against Sutherland in 2009 and 2010.

Full report under the Junior TAB..

WANT TO JOIN GLEBE HOCKEY CLUB IN SEASON 2012?

Below are some frequently asked questions for those interested in joining the club:

Why Glebe?

Glebe District Hockey Club is one the greatest, most successful hockey clubs in Sydney and arguably one of the most famous hockey clubs in the world! Players have joined Glebe Hockey from all over Sydney and from overseas, making the club a social and competitive club with a loyal following. By joining Glebe you will join a club with a rich history and a fantastic social scene.

In what competitions do Glebe teams compete?

MEN: In 2011, Glebe men will likely field 8 teams (depending on whether the proposed Sydney Hockey League starts), Premier League 1 & 2, Division 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.2 and Veteran’s.

The current SHA competition is the strongest competition in NSW and rivals the local competitions in Perth and Melbourne as the strongest competition in Australia.

Most recently, Glebe has won the Premier League 1 competition in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Glebe boasts one current Australia representative, Mark ‘Hollywood’ Paterson and one NSW representative, Matthew Wark. The current 1st Grade coach, Dean Benfield, is also an ex-NSW representative and is currently part of the coaching staff for the NSW team.

Glebe caters for all levels of players – from the elite, to the social, to beginners.

WOMEN: In 2011, Glebe women’s will field four teams, three in the Sydney Women’s Hockey League and one in the Eastern Districts Competition.

The Sydney Women’s Hockey League (SWHL) is the best competition in Sydney and a perfect playing ground for competitive players. Glebe has a first, second and third grade team, which compete in the ML2, 4 and 5 divisions.

The Eastern Districts competion sees Glebe’s fourth grade compete. This team is ideal for players who wish to learn new skills whilst also having fun with their friends. This team is also perfect for junior or younger players wishing to enter the Women's Competition and move through the grades as skills progress.

JUNIORS: The Glebe junior club is the next biggest junior club in Sydney after Sutherland, which is particularly impressive when it is considered that there are a number of rival clubs in Sydney’s inner west competing for the same talent pool of kids. A big incentive which families have found in coming to Glebe is that it is free for all kids up to U/17s level to play hockey for Glebe, as well as the welcoming family environment Glebe prides itself on. The associated costs with funding the juniors is generally subsidised by fundraising, sponsorship and by the men’s and women’s clubs.

When do Glebe train?

Glebe Men train on Tuesday’s from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Glebe Women train on Tuesday’s from 6.30pm to 8.30, depending on which team you are selected for. Training is at Briars Turf in Concord. Fitness training for men and women will be on Wednesday nights and on some Sundays during the pre-season at venues to be confirmed.

Glebe juniors train at Jubilee Oval on Wednesday nights from 5.30pm and occasionally at Cintra on Tuesday nights at 5.30 or 6.30pm depending on what team you are in.

When do Glebe play their competition games?

All Glebe Hockey Men’s games are played on artificial turf and usually played usually on a Saturday at various grounds around greater Sydney. All Glebe Hockey Women’s games are played on artificial turf and usually played on a Sunday at Homebush. Glebe junior games are almost exclusively played on artificial turf on Saturday mornings at various venues.

When does the season begin?

The hockey season usually begins in early April, but depending on your team, pre-season training commences earlier in the year, likely late January 2011. For example, trials for team allocation are held in February. Training also commences in February/March.

How does Glebe differ from other clubs in Sydney?

There are so many amazing aspects about joining the Glebe club. We are a very social and dedicated club, who are committed to the community and our Club. The Glebe District Hockey Club does not charge its juniors to play hockey. We are committed to building the sport throughout the community and investing in younger players who want to wear the maroon and white.
